POWERING OUR COMMUNITIES

Regional network upgrades deliver stronger connections for communities

April 30, 2025

Local communities across Victoria are set to benefit from AusNet’s proposed $3.5 billion investment to upgrade its energy pathway network. The planned upgrades, outlined in a submission to the Australian Energy Regulator, aim to enhance safety, reliability, and capacity while supporting the transition to clean energy.

Regional areas such as Gippsland, Albury-Wodonga, Euroa, and the Yarra Ranges stand to gain significantly from these investments. For instance, new feeder ties in Moe and Cann River will reduce the frequency and duration of power outages. Similarly, in Murrindindi and Mansfield, sectionalisation and express feeder projects will split existing feeders into additional sections that isolate faults and reduce the number of people impacted by outages when they occur.

Communities will also benefit from stronger infrastructure to support local growth. In Nagambie, for example, transferring the nearby Avenel township to a new distribution feeder will free up electricity capacity on the existing feeder, creating room for new homes, businesses, and facilities to connect to the grid in Nagambie. In Wodonga and Barnawartha, new lines will enable greater integration of renewable energy sources.

AusNet is also committing $11 million to expand its regional customer engagement team so that people in affected communities have more support, better access to information, and a stronger voice throughout the process.

The proposed upgrades will also facilitate the electrification of homes and transport, supporting a cleaner, more sustainable future while creating long term value in these regional areas.

These works are slated to commence in July 2026.
