Under a new partnership between Horizon Power and Pacific Energy, the Goldfields town of Menzies will soon transition to a modern hybrid system capable of delivering up to 80% of its total electricity needs from renewable sources. This vital infrastructure upgrade demonstrates how localized solar and battery systems can replace end-of-life legacy generators to secure long-term energy resilience for remote regional towns.
The path forward for remote energy reliability relies heavily on modern microgrids to keep the lights on and the doors open for regional communities. Located 130 kilometres north of Kalgoorlie, Menzies has historically depended on ageing diesel generators that are reaching the end of their operational lifespan. By deploying 409kW of solar panels and a 2.8MWh battery energy storage system, the town establishes a robust new energy pathway that protects residents from grid isolation while cutting annual carbon emissions by up to 500 tonnes.
A community-first perspective on regional utility management prioritises combining high renewable penetration with absolute reliability. To guarantee uninterrupted power supply during extended periods of overcast weather, Pacific Energy will also install 3.6MW of modernised diesel generation capacity to serve purely as a backup system. A similar power supply upgrade is also scheduled for the neighbouring town of Laverton, ensuring that regional growth and local industries across the Goldfields are supported by stable, fit-for-purpose energy infrastructure.
Beyond environmental benefits, transitioning off-grid towns to solar and battery storage provides a practical mechanism to stabilise long-term operational costs in remote areas. Generating power locally from the sun drastically reduces the logistical burden and expense of hauling thousands of litres of diesel fuel over long distances.
