Offshore Wind: A Path to Reliable Energy and Stronger Communities

The transition to a modernised energy grid is a significant undertaking for Australia, aimed at ensuring every community has the power needed to grow and prosper for generations to come. Recent analysis suggests that developing an offshore wind industry, particularly off the coast of Gippsland in Victoria, could play a pivotal role in this journey. By harnessing the natural strength of coastal winds, there is a clear opportunity to enhance energy reliability while significantly reducing the amount of new infrastructure required on land.

 

A report by global consultancy Jacobs indicates that integrating offshore wind into the energy mix could reduce the need for new high-voltage transmission lines by approximately 930 kilometres. This reduction is a crucial step toward building a more efficient grid. By utilising the Gippsland region’s proximity to existing coal-fired power infrastructure, offshore wind can connect to the grid more seamlessly, helping to keep the lights on and the doors open for local homes and businesses without the need for extensive new energy pathways across the landscape.

The economic benefits of this approach extend directly to Australian families and the broader economy. The report models a scenario where 7 gigawatts of offshore wind power helps to lower wholesale power prices by an estimated $5 per megawatt hour between 2033 and 2040. Furthermore, the reduced reliance on new transmission investment is estimated to save the national grid billions of dollars by 2060. These savings are essential for providing relief to families and helping local businesses thrive in a more affordable energy future.

Beyond cost savings, offshore wind offers a “steady hand” for the energy system. Unlike some sources that fluctuate, offshore winds are often strongest during winter and evening peaks—exactly when Australian communities need power the most. By providing a consistent supply of electricity, these projects help strengthen local economies and improve daily life by securing a reliable power supply that is less dependent on volatile global resource prices.

This approach also supports a balanced perspective on land use. Reducing the requirement for hundreds of kilometres of onshore transmission lines addresses concerns regarding the impact of infrastructure on agricultural land. By focusing development off the coast, the energy transition can better respect the needs of primary producers while still meeting Australia’s growing demand for power. It represents a collaborative way forward that values both the productivity of our land and the necessity of new energy sources.

As Victoria works toward its target of 95 per cent renewable energy generation by 2035, offshore wind stands out as a foundational element of a reliable and affordable energy future. By connecting these new energy sources to our communities, Australia can ensure a smooth transition that protects our heritage while powering our progress. Strengthening the grid in this way is more than a technical upgrade; it is an investment in the resilience and prosperity of every Australian community.
