POWERING OUR COMMUNITIES

Construction Commences on Hunter Transmission Upgrades

March 15, 2026

Construction has officially commenced on a significant network upgrade in the New South Wales Upper Hunter, marking a vital step in strengthening the region’s energy infrastructure. This project, part of the Hunter-Central Coast Renewable Energy Zone (HCC REZ), is designed to boost power transfer capacity by at least 1 GW by 2028. By modernising the existing grid, the initiative ensures that every community has the power needed to grow and prosper, both now and for generations to come.

The $590 million infrastructure project is a collaborative effort between electricity distributor Ausgrid and EnergyCo. It involves upgrading approximately 85 kilometres of existing powerlines and enhancing several substations, including the facility at Kurri Kurri. Additionally, two new 132 kV substations will be constructed at Sandy Creek and Antiene within the Muswellbrook local government area. These upgrades are essential for connecting new energy sources to homes and businesses, helping to keep the lights on and the doors open across the region.

What distinguishes this project is its innovative approach to sustainability and community impact. It stands as the first Renewable Energy Zone in Australia to focus on upgrading existing distribution network poles and wires rather than constructing entirely new transmission corridors. This method minimises the footprint on local landscapes while significantly increasing the grid’s ability to host an additional 1.8 GW of new renewable generation and storage projects.

These new energy pathways are a crucial step toward building a more reliable and affordable energy future for New South Wales. As older coal-fired power stations retire, the HCC REZ provides the necessary infrastructure to maintain energy security for families and industry. By facilitating the transition to diverse energy sources, the project helps ensure that local communities continue to have access to the dependable power required to thrive in a changing economic landscape.

Beyond energy reliability, the project provides a substantial boost to the local economy. The HCC REZ is expected to attract up to $3.9 billion in private investment and create approximately 590 jobs during the construction phase, followed by 220 ongoing operational roles. These opportunities strengthen local economies and improve daily life by providing long-term career paths and supporting the small businesses that serve these workers.

As Australia works to meet growing demand, projects like the Hunter network upgrade demonstrate the path forward. By investing in robust infrastructure today, the region is securing a stable supply of power that provides relief to families and helps businesses remain competitive. These enhancements to the grid are more than just technical upgrades; they are an investment in the resilience and prosperity of Australian communities.
