Building the Pathways for a More Reliable Energy Future

The landscape of the Australian energy grid is undergoing a significant transformation, marked recently by the completion of the final steel tower for the EnergyConnect project. This 700-kilometre transmission build represents a major step forward in the effort to modernise how electricity is delivered across state lines. By linking the South Australian border to Wagga Wagga in New South Wales and extending into Victoria, this project establishes a critical new energy pathway designed to support the growing power demands of local communities.

The scale of the infrastructure is a testament to the effort required to ensure every community has the power needed to prosper. Over 1,500 steel towers have been erected, involving more than 46,000 tonnes of structural steel and 10,385 kilometres of high-voltage conductor cabling. This immense network is built to connect renewable energy assets across three states to the National Electricity Market (NEM), facilitating the flow of cleaner and more affordable power to Australian homes and businesses.

Building a more reliable and affordable energy future is a national priority, particularly as traditional coal-fired generation begins to wind down. New transmission projects like EnergyConnect provide the necessary stability to the grid, offering families and industry peace of mind during this transition. The project utilised 733 guyed towers, which require significantly less steel and concrete than conventional structures. The infrastructure also includes world-class technical installations, such as the nearly completed Dinawan substation and the expansion of the Wagga Wagga substation. These facilities house complex machinery, including synchronous condensers, which play a vital role in maintaining the technical stability of the power supply. Such investments in local infrastructure strengthen regional economies and improve daily life by securing a consistent and dependable flow of energy.
