Goyder North Approval: A Significant Step Toward Australia’s Reliable Energy Future

The path toward a more resilient and affordable energy future for Australian communities has reached a new milestone with the federal approval of the northern stages of the Goyder Renewables Zone in South Australia. This development represents a critical step in the national effort to modernise the electricity grid, ensuring that homes and businesses have access to the power they need to grow and prosper. By connecting new, large-scale energy sources to the national network, these projects aim to keep the lights on and the doors open for local economies across the country.

Located near Burra in South Australia’s mid-north, the Goyder North project has received the green light for its first two stages. The plans include 99 wind turbines capable of generating 600 megawatts (MW) of power, alongside a significant battery energy storage system. This infrastructure is designed to capture and store energy, providing a steady supply that helps stabilise the grid. To ensure the project coexists sustainably with the local environment, the approval includes specific conditions to protect native wildlife, such as the pygmy blue-tongued lizard and the Flinders Ranges worm lizard.

The expansion of the Goyder Renewables Zone is a key component of a much larger vision for Australian energy. Once fully realised, the hub is expected to deliver more than 2.6 gigawatts (GW) of wind and solar generation, supported by extensive battery storage capacity. This massive scale is essential for meeting Australia’s growing demand for power. By establishing these new energy pathways, the project helps get electricity from where it is generated to the communities that rely on it most, strengthening the link between regional energy production and urban demand centres.

The benefits of these energy pathways extend beyond residential reliability; they are also vital for supporting the industries that drive the Australian economy. For example, recent agreements will see wind capacity from the Goyder precinct used to provide “baseload renewables” to major industrial operations, such as the Olympic Dam mine. By providing high-volume, reliable energy to large-scale employers, these projects help secure the commercial foundations of regional communities, ensuring that local businesses can continue to thrive and provide jobs for generations to come.

Strategically positioned at a major network crossroads, the Goyder project is perfectly placed to distribute power across state lines. Through the EnergyConnect interconnector, this South Australian energy hub will link to New South Wales, while planned transmission lines are set to carry power further west toward Whyalla and Perth. This interconnectedness is a crucial part of building a reliable national grid, ensuring that no community is left behind as the country transitions to more modern energy sources.

As the Goyder Renewables Zone continues to develop, it remains a prime example of how investing in new energy infrastructure can provide tangible relief to Australian families.
