Ensuring transparent and equitable access to energy information for all communities

To improve the way the energy sector communicates with culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities, AusNet has awarded RMIT University a $30,000 grant from its annual Vulnerability Research Grant program.

This funding will support research to improve communications particularly to CALD individuals who face barriers in accessing important energy information. This includes older residents and newly arrived migrants, who may have limited digital access or struggle with technology.

As the energy sector increasingly shifts to online communication channels, those with low digital literacy or limited access to digital resources risk being left behind, exacerbating vulnerability and limiting their ability to make informed decisions about their energy use.

Amanda Robertson, AusNet’s Executive General Manager of Compliance, Risk & Corporate Affairs, emphasised the importance of addressing these disparities.

“Through this grant we hope to gain a more detailed understanding of these customers’ needs, so we can develop strategies to engage with them more effectively,” Ms Robertson said.

The collaboration between RMIT University and AusNet’s Customer Communications and Research teams will leverage RMIT’s expertise in consumer research, building on their successful track record with organisations such as the Australian Red Cross Lifeblood and VicHealth.

Through this grant, AusNet aims to empower CALD communities, ensuring they are not only informed but also equipped to navigate the complexities of the energy sector.

The Vulnerability Research Grant is part of AusNet’s broader commitment to supporting customers experiencing vulnerability, with previous grants focusing on individuals with disabilities and older customers.
